THE FAME GANG

The term “FAME Gang” dates back to the early 1970s, when FAME Recording Studios entered a new chapter. After the original Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section moved on, Rick Hall built a new in-house collective of session players who would become known as the FAME Gang, one of the most versatile and influential studio bands of the era. In the 70’s the FAME Gang played on more hit records than the Beatles.

At a time of deep division in the American South, the FAME Gang stood apart. They were one of the first fully integrated rhythm sections in the country and the only one of its kind in Muscle Shoals. That unity translated directly into the music, a seamless blend of soul, country, rock, and pop that carried an unmistakable feel.

Anchored by players like Spooner Oldham, Clayton Ivey, and Bob Wray, the FAME Gang backed an extraordinary run of artists, contributing to hits by Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter, Candi Staton, Mac Davis, Lou Rawls, Little Richard, The Osmonds, and Bobbie Gentry, among many others. Their approach was rooted in feel over flash, with an instinctive groove and deep musical empathy that made each record come alive.

Unlike a fixed band, the FAME Gang was fluid by design. Rick Hall assembled players based on chemistry and the needs of each session, creating a rotating but cohesive unit that could adapt to any artist or genre while maintaining the signature Muscle Shoals sound.

Today, the modern FAME Gang carries that legacy forward. Musicians like Gary Nichols, Justin Holder, Jimbo Hart, Peter Levin, and James LeBlanc represent a new generation, working alongside legends like Spooner Oldham, Clayton Ivey, Bob Wray, and Mickey Buckins. Together, they continue a tradition built on collaboration, feel, and authenticity.

More than just a rhythm section, the FAME Gang is a living symbol of what made Muscle Shoals special then and what still makes it matter today.
